Wicked Comic Con: Why Your Ears Should Be Part of the Costume
Wicked Comic Con is returning to Boston on October 5, 2025, held at the Westin Boston Seaport District. Doors open at 10 AM and the event runs until 5 PM. If you’re planning to meet creators, explore vendor booths, cosplay, and enjoy all the excitement, it’s the perfect chance to enjoy pop culture, but with a bit of hearing awareness. Although it’s not a loud concert, the combination of chatter, amplified announcements, background music, and crowded halls means sound adds up.
Why Even Comic-Cons Can Be Noisy
- Cumulative noise from speakers, PA systems, game demos, and music can push sound levels in certain areas above 80-85 decibels, especially near demo stations or performance stages.
- Close quarters amplify noise: crowded vendor aisles echo, conversations pile over each other, and sound reflects off hard surfaces.
- Fatigue & ringing: Even moderate noise over several hours can cause temporary ringing or muffled hearing, often ignored, but over time contributing to hearing loss.
What You Can Do: Hearing Protection Solutions
- Wear high-fidelity earplugs: Choose affordable reusable earplugs that reduce sound levels but still allow you to hear conversations and ambient sound.
- Plan your routine inside the venue:Avoid being right next to sound sources like performance stages, PA speakers, or amplified demo booths when you can.
- Give your ears a break: Step outside for a few minutes or find quieter corners of the convention space every hour or so.
- Limit total exposure: If you plan to spend the whole day, consider arriving early (before crowds build) or
leaving before the loudest parts.
Post-event check: If after Wicked Comic Con you notice ringing, muffled hearing, or difficulty
understanding speech, schedule a hearing screening.
